Can't turn off Service light S60 2001

While I have the instructions, the light just does not reset.
(Assuming the reader here knows the procedure.)
No lights flash, and I get the beep at the end.
The trip odometer goes to zero OK, but still no reset.
I have tried many times, but no luck.
I've tried many variations to no avail.
The instructions are clear.
Any idea what is wrong?
