Hmmmm,
At least he will have the warranty to cover the issues that do pop up. My 1998 would not be the icon of Volvo quality if there were such a car. You of course will see the people who no matter what breaks on their car praise Volvo and forget about the 10 times they brought their car in because of something "little". I sincerely wish I could be one of those people.
Overall it was time for a new car for your friend. The Volvo powerplant supposedly is pretty good and lasts a long time. Mine has 70 some odd K miles on it and the only "major" things I have had done were the Engine Mounts and having a front wheel spindle replaced. Not So major was a battery that shorted internally and left me stranded. Tons of electrical/trim/accessory problems though (too many to list). I have had 100k+ mile Honda's that have been more dependable BUT after owning this car I could never drive one of those things ever again.
If he was driving a Renault for so long he probably will have no problem getting "into the program" with Volvo.
