Hello All,
I have a 1999 XC with 95,000 miles on it. In the past 3 to 4 years I have had to replace the power steering fluid reservoir 3 times. Each time fluid would collect around the seam of the reservoir tank. There is a seam located dead center in the middle of the tank. Apparently during the manufacturing process the two halfs are attached together.
Each time I've replaced the reservoir it was due to the fact that power steering fluid was collecting at the seam. I replaced the caps a few times thinking perhaps the gasket on the cap had become rigid and was no longer sealing properly when you twisted the top shut. That in turn was allowing fluid to escape out of the reservoir and leak down the side of the tank and collect at the seam. But that wasn't the case. Fluid still collected at the seam even with a new cap. Once I replaced the resevoir the leak would go away for a while, but return at the same spot a year or so later.
Now my THIRD power steering reservoir is once again leaking powersteering fluid at the seam. Not a lot, mind you, the fluid is "sweating" at the seam. Is this a design defect that I have to live with?
I'd like to know if others have had the same experience. Thanks to all who reply.
Hugh
