cover over spark plugs 850 1996

I'm having a lot of trouble getting the screws to unscrew so that i can get the cover off the top of the engine block to check the spark plugs. I've tried screw drivers and wrenches and they still wont budge. what i was wondering was wether it is okay to use something like liquid wrench or wd40 or would it drip down into the plugs?
