air pump/check engine light S70 1998

hi all! i have had numerous check engine light issues and have replaced just about everything possible just to have that light come right back on! turns out it was the air pump, which i understand is not vital. there was quite a bit of noise however, which has cesaed, but can't i just remove it without replacing and how can i get that light to go off? any help is appreciated!
