Hey all,
Even though I don't drive my prized '96 850 as much as I once did, I still keep up with what's going on with it, since my folks have decided to drive it on an occasional basis now. Didn't see much driving time over the winter but it seems to be doing all right- has about 85k on it at the moment.
My dad called me this evening to discuss something that could be a potential problem. He said that when starting it after leaving work, he noticed both the ABS and "Tracs Off" warning lights remained on well after all the other ones had gone off. He thought it was odd. He turned the car off, let it sit cold for about 5 minutes, then started it again. That time each warning light went off on the dot. However, at home, when he shifted from Drive to Reverse (it's automatic), he heard what he described as a "loud, banging noise" resonating from the underneath, perhaps from the transmission. Since I'm not at home, I can't see what the problem is, which makes me upset. But dad said when going from Park to Drive or vice-versa, it seems fine and engages the gears quickly.
I would suppose it's probably either the ABS sensor (happens a lot on '96s) or PNP switch. Maybe it is the PNP switch. If it's the ABS sensor, I recall some of you mentioning a gentleman who can rebuild those things. What's the guy's name, and is he reputable? Any help here would be appreciated!
