V70 blower motor malfunction, but with a twist...... V70-XC70 1998

My '98 V70 blower motor runs only on high, and only for 1 or 2 seconds. This differs from most of the discussions I've read here, where it runs continuously on high, due to the resistor pack malfunction, apparently.

This car has an "automatic" setting on the blower switch, so I don't know if that is the auto-climate system or not. The LED's on the AC button and the circulation/air intake button both flash simultaneously when the car is turned on.

And, of course, this happened 300 miles away from home, in the hottest October weather in a while....but I gotta tackle it when I get home.

So --- with the fact that the high-speed blower shuts off almost immediately, has anyone encountered this twist to the symptoms ?
