A winter question: snow tire specs for XC70

Hi,
I know it`s pretty much the beginning of summer & this question is winter related.
My wife bought an 03 XC a few weeks back after retiring her 95 850(to me!). I noticed while reading thru the manual a few days ago that Volvo specifically recommends putting on 225x16 for winter tires. Is this an absolute? My wife won`t be too happy if so as she just bought a new set of Hakka`s last November for the 850 & was planning to put them on the XC next Fall.
Your experience/advice?
