Calling all turbo gurus

Hi All

My son has recently aquired a 95 850 his first volvo
He got it from the po who said it needed a new turbo
when he came home it was down 3 qts of oil blue smoke
coming out the exhaust and oil all over the bottom of the engine
after much claening it seams to be leaking from the return line gasket
and the bottom of the intercooler
my question is the turbo itself failed or is the oil in the intercooler a result of the return linr gasket leak. I for one have a hard time seeing how it could happen but the turbo makes no noise and sees tight when you spin it.
It seems hard to belive that that much oil could be getting into the turbo without a pluged return line or something.
