check engine code 850 1997

97 850 check engine light came on a few days ago. Stopped at my local Advance to use their scanner-the clerk said they weren't sure it would work on "those" cars. It returned a P1308 and a P0450 code. When I tried to clear the codes( I had replaced the timing belt about 10,000 miles ago and wanted to clear the service light as well) it indicated that is could not communicate with vehicle.
??? are:1) in view of the communication problems and the clerk's caveat,should I believe the codes delivered(the diagnostic seemed to go w/o problem)and if so what do they mean,and 2)what should I understand about the communication problem and how do I clear the codes?
