key sticking in ignition -- normal ?

Just bought '01 XC w/95K miles. Had trouble with getting car out of park and taking key out of ignition. Indy mechanic removed solenoid (brake safety). No problm getting car into gear but still need to play w/key to get it out. Is this normal or do I still have a problem.
