Transmission Problems?? 850

I have owned a 93 850 for at least 10 yrs. A couple years ago I posted help for PNP and then transmission solenoid. Last year I finally got around replacing the S2 solenoid and things were looking up!!
HOWEVER....the newest problem is that the car has started to surge in gear at stop. The idle severely drops and the car must be placed in N or P. Once the red light changes, I have to place the trans back in D and after a sluggish start, it runs fine. Until.......another red light!!
This appears to be the torque conv. not slipping properly? I have check the fluid and all appear OK. No light on the dash but I plan to run the diagnostics on trans (front fender). Has anyone experineced this type problem? What was the outcome? I considered changing/flushing the trans?
Is there some type of idle kick-up that may cause this problem?

It may be a throttle position switch. My '96 855 behave funky during accelaration and I suspected transmission. But the switch fixed it. I'm not sure your problem is it but the switch is around $50.

Where is S2 solenoid located at? What does it do? Did you have the same problem befor you replace PNP switch ans S2 solenoid? I have same problem from stop to go. Mine is like as if it's in neutral for a few seconds and suddenly gear engages. There's no code from A1 either. I flushed the ATF with synthetic ATF and it helps but still delaying once a while.

The S2 solenoid is part of the transmission valve body. I believe it's responsibe for the first-second shift. It can be replaced without removing the tranny. My '95 has the same slipage problem when it gets warm after some freeway miles or downshifting going up a hill. It's heat related caused by some worn tranny parts. Not running the ac helps. I've also installed a Hayden tranny fluid cooler that has helped some but it's gradually getting worse.

The S2 is located inside the transmission. I had fault codes that indicated the S2 had failed. The symptoms were not related to my current problem. The system would hit the S2 error code and then go into the "Limp Home Mode". This would be the flashing "Arrow Up" on the dash/idiot lights. The car would then start in 2nd gear. I could reset the error codes and after a short drive the problem would re-appear. I did not have the slipping in neutral type problem.

It could be a few things. There's an idle air control valve that actually controls your idle rpm speeds. Its mounted right in front of the throttle body. You can clean it out with some Berryman's Chemtool spray (Walmart). Also clean out the throttle body while you're down there. If you DO pull out some trouble codes from the A1 socket that would give you some clues if it is the tranny, but it sounds more like just a motor problem. Check for any vacuum leaks too. A vacuum leak will play havoc on rpm control.

      Mike,
I have tried many things. Cleaning the throttle body and the idle air control valve. I have even re-flushed the trans. I keep coming back to the same thing...it appears to be the torque converter?? I still have no codes. I have also tried to go to "test mode 4" I can cycle all of the items...including lock-up. Could a faulty IAC still be giving me the problems? Where are the codes for this and/or the trans?

Mike thanks for the reply -
Is berryman's chemtool just a type of carb cleaner? It appears that the car will die out if I let it continue to surge?? Would the idle air control valve not give the same problems in neutral? Or is it because there is no load in neutral and drive makes it "kick-up"? Are there fault codes for the idle air control valve...throttle body valve? Is there any way to disconnect or fool these to some position and check their operation?

also clean the throtle body...10 mins to do a quick one...90 minutes to do it properly......

also cahnge the transmission fluid if its been in for longer than 25k miles.....flush not just drop the pan!
