ETM Electronic throttle module reimbursement V70-XC70 1999

In the latest issue of Rolling magazine, Bo Larsen a Volvo press spokesperson stated "Those that have paid for the repairs themselves will be reimbursed." This appears to be all BS. My local dealer said there is no official statement as such and hence, no reimbursement. Has anyone received reimbursement from Volvo, and if so, who did you contact? Show me the money not just lip service! The faulty ETM is nothing but bad press for Volvo. Sincerely, Still rolling but peeved.

I wrote to Volvo customer care and cited an excerpt from the rolling article that was posted on the vexed site. I have not seen the actual article. A rep contacted me and said the reimbursements were only occurring in Sweden but since I was not too far out of warranty, he would look into it (I am at 4 years 9 months and 48k). He called back and said the regional guy has now agreed to a refund of 604 (my cost was about 1100) which I understand to be the cost of parts. I am glad to receive something but still think a full reimbursement should be made. Also, the new part installed in July does not appear to be working properly and I will probably have to have it replaced again (this time under 12 month 12k warranty for new part).

Make sure you get all of your money back from Volvo. You have already overpaid for your car when you bought it with the "condition" that was not disclosed at the time of the purchase. The company has just asked you to pay for the faulty design again and is trying to make you feel like you have reached a win-win solution. Don't be fooled.

Evidently, Rolling got it wrong. Reimbursement is only happenning in Sweden. I hope Volvo USA will follow suit. Anyway, you need to go here to read all about what is happening within the group called VEXED...the group that has the class-action going on:

Good luck getting money back from Volvo on your ETM replacement. Let us know what's going on. I'm sure you can find the actual piece at the site I mention above, along with National Highway Safety's actual report as well, as they are looking into things now and seem to be more in support of the consumer due to potential safety issues concerning the ETM.

Is there a place where you can see this article on-line? Seeing as how we appear to be experiencing the dreaded ETM failure, I wouldn't mind having a copy in hand when I go to the Volvo dealership. Our's made 100k before any problems, so I guess we have faired pretty well compared to others.

Look in the archives. There is a guy getting together a Class Action LS against volvo and their treatment of people over with the ETM fiasco. All they've done is stall with half ass "fixes" until the car is out of warrenty and then screw the owner with a $1000.+ bill for a new unit. Problem is the new unit is the same as the one that failed so you get to do it all over again

I think Volvo should reimburse all V70/C70 etc owners due to this problem. It is giving them a bad name and even to the point where I am considering not replacing my current Volvo with another one as I don't want landed with a large bill for what is a ridiculously poor piece of engineering to replace a potentiometer which costs pennies.

Based on the comments on this board and a problem with my XC70, I filed a report with the National Highway Safety Admin last January. I recevied an e-mail this week from the investigator who is looking into the problem. I suggest anyone who has an experienced a failure of hte throttle module and how it affected the safety of your vehicle up to the time of failure, contact the below listed individual.

Yesterday, I recieved a phone call from Stephen McHenry at the NHTSA. He asked me questions about my issues with the ETM (s80 model). If you had a problem with this ETM, please file with the NHTSA. The more omplaints, the better the recall on this item. Let your voice be heard.
My take away from this phone call was that steps are in place and a closer step to a recall.

ETM Electronic throttle module reimbursement V70-XC70 2001

The ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) in our 2001 Volvo XC70 failed on my wife in the middle of heavy traffic on the highway. She was in the middle lane of three and was traveling about 50 MPH. The engine died completely and she had a hard time making it through traffic to the side of the road. She had to sit on the shoulder for about 15 minutes before the car would start again.
I discussed the heavy failure rate of Volvo ETMs with our Volvo Dealer, but in the end, we had to replace it at a cost of $1,090.45. The mileage on our Volvo was 67,000.
When I did a search for complaints on www.safercar.gov, I didn't see any other Volvo ETM complaints... I submitted one. If you have a failed ETM, please submit a complaint so that a recall may happen!

ETM failure made TV V70-XC70 2000

VEXED ETM made TV
On the 10:00 PM news VEXED got its 6 minutes of fame. On September 14th Tony Kovaleski, a 17 time Emmy winner, broadcast the first investigative report on the VOLVO electronic throttle module failure on the ABC channel in Denver. We had been working on this since I contacted them in June. Their e-mail has received many horror stories from just the Denver listening area. As yet it has not been picked up by the ABC network. Make your local ABC station aware of the link.

Tony says there will be followup reorts as additional information comes in.

The full report is available in both text and video at http://www.thedenverchannel.com/new...281/detail.html. or www.kmgh.com and click on 'Investigators'.

Also, check out http://vexedvolvo.org. It has much of the information I have posted previously.

No word yet from NHTSA about the report due back from VOLVO on September 15.
