We now have a 2001 S40 to accompany our 1999 V70. It seems like a nice little car and is fun to drive. I guess I'll be lurking on this board now too. Any recommendations for the type of gas to use in this car. The manual says regular is the minimum but with a turbo, I was wondering if we ought to use the mid-grade or does it matter that much?

Truthfully, I thought my manual called for 91 octane....I'll look again.
In any event, I almost ALWAYS use premium.
I also feel it gives better mileage and makes the car perform better.

The engine management system will adjust the ignition timing to accomodate any octane of gas 87 and up. Try a couple of tankfulls of each to see what you prefer. That said, I use 93 octane because I get about 3-4mpg better gas mileage and it has a little more pep.

Use a good synthetic oil every 7500mi because of the turbo.

Enjoy the S40.
