I bought a 95 850 turbo wagon today for $ 900 but, it has some mechanical issues.

1) I have black smoke coming out of the tail pipe under heavy throttle. The boost gauge needle only goes th the begining of the white area. The car seems to cut back also like it is skipping. I had a similar problem in a 91 940 and it was a cracked turbo hose. Does this sound like it may be the same thing. If so wich turbo hose should i start with.

2) AC climate control light and recirculation light blinks when I first turn on the ac. The ac is barely cool.

3) The turn signals do not work. I can push the stalk to the left or right and nothing happens. It doesn't even make the clicking noise. Does this car have a flasher fuse or is it the turn signal switch.

$) Also the abs light is on. I know about the abs module problems in 97 and up
models. But what could it be in a 95.

I know this sounds like a lot of problems but, the car has 136 k miles on it and the body and interior are in pretty good shape.

Try this, it may not do much help but it may help.
Wiggle the ignition switch until the ABS light turns OFF, the turn signals should work at this point.
If this happens, then the electrical portion of the ignition switch may be on the way out.

I tried that and the abs light went off, turn signals work and the head light switch works. So, That looks like that is my problem.

I have inspected the car further and found these things out.

1)I checked the freon and it was low, I added 2 cans of freon and now the air is cold but the acc lights are still blinking when you first turn the ac on.

2) I briefly looked over the turbo hoses and found a big gash in the hose going to the intercooler on top of the radiator. So< i assume that is causing the rich condition / black smoke.

3) I believe the headlight switch is out, the off position works, the park light position works, but the 3rd position doesn,t work. No dash light park lights or
head lights but when I turn the high beams on the headlights come on. Could this be connected with the turn signals not working. Thanks Vitor I will try your tip.

The blinking AC lights are a system trouble indicator. The Climate control system has two sensors in each overhead handle above the driver’s door and passenger door. These need to be vacuumed out as they get filled with dust and then cause the error code. Could be something else, but I would try cleaning the sensors first.

Try Victors ignition test. If you wiggle the ignition switch and things start to work, replace the electronic portion of the ignition switch. Instruction can be found on volvospeed.com under Bay 13. (Great source of information)

If you ABS light continues to stay on, then you most likely have a bad ABS control module. All 850's have the same issue in this department. If the control module is bad, you can pull it out yourself and send it to Vic Rocha for a rebuild. Very good service at a fraction of the dealers price to repair, and once rebuilt, you will have a better unit than new.

I am going try to wiggle the ignition today. I have had Vic rebuild a module ona 96 850 before.The 95 has a different type of module does he rebuild those too. I will also try and clean the climate control sensors.
