ATF Fluid Change V70-XC70 2001

I was going to change my ATF fluid this weekend, and my manual specifies using only Volvo Specially Formulated fluid. I routinely use MOBIL One Synthetic in my 96 855 Turbo Tranny. I called two Volvo dealers, and they can't cross reference the VOLVO ATF fluid for this car and say only this fluid should be used. Is this because of the AWD and/or bevel gear? Please advise anyone.
Thanks in advance...

    Larry,
Although I’m new on this board, I’m quite familiar with ATFs and many motor oils on the market today. Your XC comes with an Asin AT unit, which specs a Toyota T-IV fluid. Thus, any ATF that supports the Toyota T-IV spec will do the job. If you are on a budget, I suggest giving Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle ATF a try since it is widely available for less than $3/quart and supports the Toyota T-IV spec. However, if you are willing to spend a bit more, Amsoil Universal ATF (full synthetic) is a better choice. Amsoil Universal ATF is about $66/10-quarts shipped with the preferred customer cost. A good dealer will waive the preferred customer sign-up fee if you place an order of $50 or more.

Find a transmission shop that has a T-Tech Transmission Fluid Exchange machine. If you go to Jiffy Lube, they now only stock Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle ATF and will perform the T-Tech Service using that fluid for $99. However, if bring your own fluid, at least my local Jiffy Lube will charge $50 for labor, which is a very reasonable charge.

Since you are probably running on the original fill, I suggest the following procedure to ensure that you flush as much of the ATF out as possible:

    1) Drain the fluid by removing the pan
    2) Thoroughly clean the pan and replace the filter
    3) Reinstall the pan with a new gasket
    4) Refill with the correct amount of new fluid. (A pan drop usually removes about 3-5 quarts of fluid, which is usually about 1/3-1/2 of the total capacity of the system)
    5) Take vehicle to Jiffy Lube or another shop that has a T-Tech machine. Preferably, have them “T-Tech” the transmission with Amsoil Universal ATF.

Follow the above steps only if your transmission has a serviceable pan and filter. I’m not 100% familiar with your particular Volvo, but some Volvos don’t have a serviceable pan or filter. If there is no serviceable pan or filter, simply skip steps 1-4 and just follow step 5. Simply take the car to a transmission shop run the T-Tech preferably with Amsoil Universal ATF.

    Hope this helps,
    Michael

I use to change my auto transmission fluid myself, but with my old 1998 Cross Country I had the transmission “power flushed” noticed the difference. I now own a 2004 Cross Country and the dealer says the fluid alone runs about $400.00. I was told the transmission fluid needed to be changed around 100,000 miles. Not to sure about what I was told.

The ATF from the dealer here in town runs something like $9.00 to $11.00 per quart (To tell you the truth I can't remember exactly). I received an email response from Mobil telling me that their synthetic ATF is not rated for the Volvo transmission. I don't know about Amsoil but I would definitely contact them first to get the straight scoop.

I don't have an XC or it's manual,but..... check this web site and see if this Mobil ATF matches the Volvo spec in your owner's manual.
