WARNING - Be aware when you are working on the seat there is a chance you could accidently deploy the SIPS bag and if you break the power seat switch module you will be out $300 and the driver seat will be stuck in one position.
With that said;
Move the seat back and up as far as it will go. (Ignition key isn't needed)
Grab your volt ohmn meter and set the range to 20V DC.
Look under the seat and find a 16 pin green connector connected to a black square box.(Do not remove connector yet)
The green connector pins are; lower row from left to right are pins 1 to 7, upper row left to right are pins 8 to 16.
Back probe with your volt ohmn meter pin 8 which adjusts seat forward. (you can use a door bolt for ground)
You should see aprox. 12 volts. (If not check fuses. You have a different problem)
With volt ohmn still attached to pin 8, operate the seat forward positioner.
Pin 8 voltage should drop to 0 volts if switch is working correctly. In my case the voltage never dropped which indicated the positioner switch was faulty. You can do the same test on pin 9 which moves the seat back.
Disconnect volt ohm meter.
Move seat all the forward and up as far as possible. You might have to use the memory buttons to accomplish this.
Disconnect negative battery lead and wait aprox. 10 mins.
Disconnect 16 pin green connecter. There is a latch on the underside of the connector. Be gentle.
Remove plastic seat side molding which contains the power seat switch module. Lift up starting from the front. It is held on by one metal stubborn clip near the front. Be careful not to break the side molding piece.
Remove the three screws which hold the switch module into the side molding.
WARNING - When you do the following step, small springs will fall out.
Remove the black screws holding the circuit board to switch module and remove circuit board. (The levers do not need to be removed.)
Squirt the black switches around posts with a contact cleaner/lube and operate switches.
Re-assemble switch module ( make sure you get the little springs installed) and into seat side molding.
Install seat side molding back into car and re-connect green connecter under seat.
The seat should now move forward.
I am currently looking for an after market switch repalce to use in the power seat switch module when the switches actually break. I will not pay Volvo $300.00 for a new piece of crap. The ETM issue is frying my nuts as it is.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me. I have a pretty good relationship with an independent Volvo garage in Portland, OR and do my own maintenance and repairs on this car.
