That mysterious black box... S80

On my 2001 S80 2.9, there is a "black box" that is bolted to the engine, directly behind the dip stick tube. It's about 7" tall and 3" wide, rectangular in shape. There is a hose coming out of the engine block that goes into it so I assume it's part of the PCV system.

Can someone confirm what this black box is, what it does, and tell me whether it requires servicing. My owners manual says there is some sort of filter in the PCV system that needs periodic inspection/cleaning. Is the filter in that box? If so, how do you take it out to clean it?

Any info much appreciated. Thanks.

    hi,
that box is part of the pcv system and it is basically a oil/vapour seperator that allows crankcase gases to be vented out of the crankcase into the induction system. no you cant service it. there is a breather located under the manifold that needs cleaning out from time to time but its very hard to get to (unless the manifold is off.)the only other filter involved is the air filter.

      Thanks for the info, Steve.

Is the "breather" you refer to some sort of screen or filter? Where exactly is this breather located...is it inside the manifold somewhere?

Or are you referring to the metal orifice nipple in the upper intake manifold that the PCV vacumn line attaches to? (You are right...very hard to get to...I have cleaned it out without removing the upper intake manifold with some metal wire and carefully snaking it into the nipple)

Can you clarify please, thank you.

yes i was talking about the nipple,it can clog up and cause all the gases to flow into the etm which causes it to post dtc's and/or fail.

Steve -- the weird thing is my owners manual says (word for word):

"The orifice nipple in the intake manifold and the filter at the end of the PCV hose in the air cleaner should be inspected at 60K miles and thereafter at 30K mile intervals".

I'll be damned if I can find "the filter at the end of the PCV hose in the air cleaner". In fact, I don't see any PCV hoses running to the air cleaner at all.

The only thing I can figure is that the part about the filter is just plain wrong, and that this language was erroneously printed in the owners manual. I don't think it applies to my engine at all. (2.9...non-turbo).

          Thanks for your help.

exactly ,the manual is not just for the t6 version it applies to the other motors as well. dont take what it says for gospel. there is no pcv hose going to the air cleaner. there is a breather hose that conects to the main air intake hose on top of the engine. its covered by a plastic shield and also has an electrical connector going to it (heater element to stop it clogging), but there is no filter in this either as far as i know.

            steve.
