For all of you down under guys, 10W30 year round will work just fine (10W50 for those who live in the outback). If you cannot get synthetic then change the oil every 5000K.
I wonder if you could convince Mobile Oil/ Amsoil / Redline to let you "test" it under extreme conditions, like a trip to Alice Springs in December???

I appreciate the responses , I have looked into the oils situation and I can purchase mobil 1 ATF oil only through the mobil distributor. I can also purchase the 10/50w in the mobil 1, so i'm set. I'v also just returned from the Northern Territory and it would be the last place I would take my 855,unless there was some significant warranty on offer? Your car would return similar to Fred Flinstone's if you considered torturing your Brick..

Cheers

Si850--previous post answers your question. It will take 12 quarts of Mobil 1 ATF to do your automatic transmission. Do the job yourself rather than some minute lube place. If you don't know how, respond here and I will tell you my method. The real purists prefer Amsoil over Mobil 1, but Amsoil has gotten just too darned expensive and hard to find. I thought about using it, but the only place I ever found it in Salem, Oregon, was GI Joe's, and then for almost seven dollars a quart. You can usually find Mobil 1 engine at Wal-Mart for around $4.80, but never Mobil 1 ATF. For that you usually have to go to NAPA or some other auto outlet. I change the ATF on my 97 GLT turbo wagon every two years, my engine every 3K because of all the short distance driving. 10-30 is the best all year around to have, 5-30 in the winter as the gentleman suggested. Being in Australia I am pretty sure that Mobil 1 ATF fluid is not availabe here , Mobil 1 engine oil is available , it must be good stuff as it it triple the cost of any other oil on the market. Is there any substitute for Mobil 1 ATF fluid as If I cannot locate I will need an alternative . I will keep my eyes open. Also that Amsoil seems like it is also only available to the US.
I have researched the ATF flushing technique from various sources and I would also be very interested in your method.
My email ad is sieady@bigpond.net.au

Also , the auto shops here will pretty much tell you anything to sell oils , so If I cannot secure the Mobil 1 ATF fluid I really want to make sure that I locate a similar replacement.

Cheers,

Mobil 1 oil, not ATF, can be had here in eastern US at Costco (discount chain) for $4. a qt. but don't think they operate down under. I've only found M1 ATF in one place (Pep Boys, another chain) so it's harder to find but probably still available down there if you search. Another syn ATF is made by Redline. ALso, couple guys on the board sell Amsol so you may post under that and see if they can direct you to a source.

Best wt oil...depends on climate and usage. For the average "temperate" climate ( ~0 to 100F) and average driving, probably 10W-30 summer and 5W-30 winter. The syns are superior to dino oils in some ways but if you change on schedule either is fine. ATF THe best are Mobil 1 , Amsol or Redline synthetic.
