No Start - A6 codes 314 & 214 - replaced cam sensor - what now? 850 1993

Went to go to work yesterday and my '93 850 wouldn't start. That evening checked codes and found 314 & 214 in A6 (ignition). Having seen posts for the cam position sensor causing at least the 314, I got a replacement (used) from local indy shop and replaced, also did tune up stuff while I was at it - plugs, dist cap & rotor.

Still no start and still getting 314 & 214 from A6 (yes I cleared codes).

Don't know where to go next, any ideas out there?

Other information - after some cranking getting gas smell so I assume fuel pump is pumping. Looked under timing belt cover, and belt still there and moving. Charged battery to eliminate some of those wierd electric problems when betteries get old. Even disconnected battery for a couple hours to be sure computer reset.

    Ken,
Check for a break in one of the wires from the CPS and the rpm sensor. It may be grounding. Doesn't seem right to fall apart while you are at work. I don't know about those 1993 cars....

Good luck, you are going to need it,

Solution - or why I like my local indy 850 1993

Well I called my local indy and they gave me a few things to try - check for spark from coil by putting coil wire end near frame when cranking - good spark. Check A2 for fuel pump error - none. Battery good - on charger and fully charged. So I took the used cam sensor off and took it back to the indy figuring that I would have to go for new sensor as still getting 314 & 214.

And here is info there I can pass on to the board. Might be old news to some but a learning experiance for me.

If you get a spark then cam sensor good. 850s (V70) plugs can be easily fouled and even with new plugs may still not start easy.

Solution - Unfoul plugs. He said they take out plufs and use a propane torch to burn off any gas or oily deposits. In my case since I had planned to change soon anyway didn't boother with that just used new. Then WITHOUT touching the gas, grind the starter until it starts. They told me after a minute I might hear 1 cylinder start and then another and then another. They said just keep grinding to see if that works. In my case all five kicked in after 1 minute 31 seconds (yes I used a stopwatch).

And why I like my indy:-
1.they talked me through the problem rather then just have it towed in so they could grind starter. (Although if that didn't work that was next step)
      2. They said my old cam sensor was probably fine and they took back the used one they gave me. How many dealer shops would take back a part that didn't solve problem.

Last time I went to a dealer my experiance was no where near as friendly.

Thanks Klaus for the response. You are usually right, but I am glad this time it was something else! Only 6K more miles to 300,000!

        Ken,
You wrote...also did tune up stuff while I was at it - plugs, dist cap & rotor.

So I assumed that you already put in new plugs, etc. Not left them on the shelf! :)
How many miles on the old plugs? And don't say too many.
6,000 miles and a NEW plaque for your trusty beast!
