I cut a small piece of black electrical tape V70-XC70

about 5/8 x 5/8 " and cover the light, which turns off itself after 3-4 minutes.

I have used this the last 6 years, never miss the reminder light.

Yes, most of us on this site drive on the right side of the road. Except for Boston, we also don't have many round-a-bouts to make visitors from the Islands uncomfortable :)
The next time you remove the instrument cluster to replace light bulbs, remove the service light. What a bunch of garbage.

Are you in the U.K.? No such thing as a '96 V70 over here in the States, but we do have 850's in that year. '96 850's through '98 S/V70's do take the special tool you mentioned to reset the light. I've searched long and hard and found no other alternative. Funny thing is that the light reset tool is something made in the U.K. by a company called Draker and you can find these on eBay for about $70 U.S., and this includes shipping (where I bought mine). Elsewhere, they are ridiculously expensive. If you are in the U.K., you might search for that tool over there as it should be cheaper. Unfortunately, unless you buy the Volvo Scan Tool (found one on eBay for over $1200 yesterday...wow, too expensive), there is no scan tool or OBD-II instrument that will reset the service light.
Good luck.

"there is no scan tool or OBD-II instrument that will reset the service light. "

Have to disagree, this one will do it and every other system on your car:

If that's really true, then it is a first...No one else carries a reset tool except Volvo (VST- Volvo Scan tool).

How much is this unit? Did you call them to verify '96-'98 850's and S/V/XC70's SRI (Service Reminder Indicator) can be reset? I've seen scan tools that will do ALL other re-set's except fot the SRI. Strange, but the way it is.

If what you're saying is true, then I know a lot of people who'll be wanting this tool...well, unless it's a way expensive unit.

Please find out and post back here if you don't mind.

Yes it's true.

Cost is approx 100UKP for software.

http://www.onboarddiagnostics.co.uk/shop/index.php

no VAT for buyers outside the EU.

"Did you call them to verify '96-'98 850's and S/V/XC70's SRI "

Yes, I can confirm it works for these cars.

The tool will work with many interface leads see:

So, you need the hardware including the obdII port interface and then the cost of the software is about 100UK Pounds...is that right? What would you recommend for the hardware. I have an old Pent.1 Computer running Win98 that would be good for this, but have no cords from OBDII to Serial port...any ideas here?

1. Yes

2.

Any 9pin serial to RS232 interface that is compatable with VAG-COM will do.

Here is an example:

Do not use USB or ELM leads they will not work.

Lucky guy...living in the UK was a positive thing for you. Glad things worked out. Now when you change your oil you're suppose to use the tool to reset the light even though the light may not be on. This re-sets it to be accurate for your next change. However, I'm wondering if my service light is actually bad or it already has been taken out (just bought the car a couple of months ago and the light has never been on though I've changed the oil twice now...once right after I got the car- to synthetic, and then last weekend), so for my last oil change I purposely did not reset the light. I'm waiting for it to come on so I'll know if I even really need this tool or not. If it never comes on, then I'll sell this tool to someone here in the U.S....probably by way of this board.
