How to check propeller shaft!!!! V70-XC70 1998

OK....I am getting that famous "scrapping" noise consistently every time I drive my R AWD wagon and I fear its the propeller shaft. IT has 121K miles on it. How do I determine if any of those front and rear "hardy disk" assemblies are bad OR I have a more serious problem like the bevel gear? When I yank on the front hardy disk bearing it has "slight" radial play...is this ok. Don;t want to foolishly speng $850 on a new drive shaft assembly if mine is ok! Otherwise....car is smooth and no clunking at all.

I am not much with Volvo's, but consider myself a seasoned maritimer. Just drive it into a lake to see if the propellor is working, lol.

Anyhow, I had a vibration in my 98 XC and could not determine the source.
The dealer put it up on the hoist and checked all of the bearings with an automotive stethoscope. Turns out I didn't need the propellor shaft, but both front bearing hubs were gone.
