Finding an 850 on cars.com and autotrader.com 850

Could somebody out there please enlighten me? In my ignorance I used to think that the above two sites pretty much listed most of the available used cars in the US. I have searched these two sites for a number of years, but now I notice there are hardly any private listings. All dealers. And when I try to access the classifieds of most newspapers for private listings, e.g. Oregonian, Denver Post, Statesman Journal, etc., I get blown off to cars.com. or some other car site. Did the newspapers suddenly discover they can make more money forcing advertisers to pay extra to list their car on cars.com, or did cars.com cut a deal with the newspapers not to list private ads? I can understand the used car dealers not wanting private listings on cars.com or autotrader.com because they are usually listed below dealer prices--no overhead. What's happening out there? Dick

    Dick,
Where are you? I know some really great independent Volvo re-sellers (I won't call them dealers because they aren't) who always have really nice 850's and V/S70's here in the South. If you are anywhere near, email me and I'll put you in touch. BTW, I'm in Knoxville, TN, but drove to Louisville, KY last weekend to buy a very nice S70. badger36@knology.net

It does seem to take more patience now and luck to find a good used car from a private party. My experience is that the good ones (mainly meaning not abused) are hardly advertised and don't stay on the market for very long at all. When looking for a car I check frequently (as I am sure you do) and check multiple sources, ask friends, etc. Local town newspapers in your area might be a good bet but it seems one sometimes has to wait a long while before the kind of car you want comes up.

When buying a house a few years back I brought web listings to my buyer's agent. She said I was wasting my time for the same reason - the best ones disappear very quickly, often gone before even being posted (even to her own company's site). I insisted she show me some I had picked. She was right.

The web may be making dealer vs private prices less disparate because people become quickly aware of average prices, problems with particular models, etc. Either type of sale can go better on price if you find some defect(s) in the car and keep emphasizing them to the seller. My personal experience with dealers leads me to watch more for dishonesty and misrepresentation than the price point.

I think youre patially right that these ad venues favor dealers.

But private parties are now using free classifieds more and more. If you have an inexpensive car to sell, paying to advertise it can eat the profits pretty quickly (ebay, newspapers, autotrader, etc).

One free site I suggest you hit every day is craigslist.com (For Sale> Cars+Trucks>search "volvo 850"). Hopefully there is an area local to you.

    Good luck in the search,
    Don
