ETS signal coming on S70 1999

The ETS signal keeps coming on. It does get reset whenever you start/stop the car, and then it may not come on for some time. Any ideas on what may be causeing this. Thanxxx in advance.

    An update to this thread...
Anyone who knows where broken ETM's are...please send them to Don Willson. He is trying to get Volvo to respond to their defective part. You can read all about this issue and what's going on right now at (read the whole thread):
    http://www.v70xc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=f155f52c11697f509b5e91434b89c00a&t=4875&page=1&pp=10

Read especially post #105 as to how to get the part off of the ETM to send to Don. You and future '99-'01 C/S/V/XC70 as well as S80 owners will love you for it if you can help make a difference.

You do not need to go to the dealer for this if you have a good independent mechanic that works exclusively on Volvo. Here's my post from a couple of weeks ago:

I thought I'd share my ETS replacement story so that others can avoid getting ripped off by the Volvo dealers. My ETS starting failing about two or three months ago. The first warning was s slight, but persistent hestitation that I only noticed at highway speeds. This was followed soon thereafter by the ETS warning light in the dash. My first stop was right here to the S70 board to get some advice from you all. Thanks for the great information - it really helped me. I'll have to say that I initially ignored the advice that a thorough cleaning of the throttle body might solve the problem. It did, for three whole days! Since the car basically ran OK, I wasn't in any great hurry to part with the big bucks that I'd read some folks paid to have their throttle body replaced. But I also didn't want to reach that point where the throttle body totally failed and I limited to the "limp home" mode. So last week I check the internet to price a replacement throttle body. My aim was to but one off the internet and save the markup charged by either the dealer or my local mechanic. The best price that I found was at FCP Groton (web address below) for $485, plus an extra couple of bucks for a gasket. I picked the car up today and my mechanic charged me only $215 to install the throttle body. I wanted to share the experience since this is a common failure with the S70 (1999 and 2000) and typically a pricey repair. $700 in total is clearly a good bit less than the $1,100 to $1,400 that I'd read the dealers charge for this repair. Also, I received the part from via UPS ground in only three days from FCP Groton. Good luck to those with similar ETS issues - I hope this might help someone out there!

I feel better knowing I paid my dealer just $780. They matched Groton, then charged internal shop labor. Point West in Dallas has got to be about the best dealer out there. They consistantly give me internet prices for parts and lower the labor so my final ia about the same as the two indys in the area. The service manager has also come out to inspect my car to see if my diagnosis is correct, and tells me the best ways to fix the problem myself, so I don't have to have them do it. Can't say enough about them.

Various boarders report that when their ETS failed, they were doing stuff like driving on the highway. Their cars quit with no appreciable warning. Do you want to be doing that with a semi following close behind?

The ETS light is a sign that you need a new ETS. Try and get yourself a good price, but get it fixed before it dies. I don't want to be behind you when it fails catastrophically.

Also, log onto the NHTSA website and report it. If there are enough reports, maybe NHTSA will force Volvo to recall the part (although it sounds like they don't have a better alternative). At least they would be forced to pay for the replacements.

Volvo should be ashamed of themselves for this very dangerous failure.

ETS signal coming on S70 1999

Reference my post a few weeks ago.

ETS light came on then, and only once since then. But this time light was accompanied by the characteristic oscilating RPM and computer switch to limp-home mode (really moved slow). Check engine light came on soon after. Turned off engine for a few minutes. Upon restart, could go normal speed by keeping RPMs up by reving it at stops (in neutral - auto trans) and going fast between stops. Went right to the dealer as they knew of my impending ETM failure from several weeks ago. They matched FCP Groton's $485 price, gave me internal shop rate, and with taxes was about $780 total.

Runs very well now. Smoother than in some time, rock steady idle, and seems to have better power. My fuel economy is running about 1-2 mpg better also.

They told me the new unit has been upgraded over the unit that failed, and should last about twice as long as the original. But also said it would fail eventually. Well, I got 102,000 miles on the first one.

      ETS signal coming on---Bend over S70 1999

And get ready to fork out alot of $$$.. Volvo knows this is a problem, 100% failure rates on the ETMs. They should be disgusted with themselves. I just took mine in today. Same problem, 130,000 miles on it, so I guess I am one of the lucky ones, but I don't feel it after forking out that kind of dough. I love Volvo's but the Hondas are starting to look awefully good!

ETS signal coming on S70 1999

Its a defective part that volvo is aware of, they are making lots of $$$$$ on 70 and 80 series cars, replacing the ETM.
I just replaced the ETM on my 2000 C70 with 40K miles. The work must be done at the dealer, because they have to load in the software.
The dealer will mark up the cost of the ETM (dealer cost $331) between $600 and 700 dollars plus labor and software and u can pay as high as 1K.
The kicker is they replace the ETM with the same made in Italy, Marelli ETM that is causing the problem, so if u keep the car it could happen again.
Be aware that one of these times the ETS light will come and the car will die.
Don't panick, pull to the side of the road disconnect the bat. for several min.,start the car the ETS light will remain on, but the car is drivable.
I saved myself about $200 maybe $300 by shopping around onthe Volvo parts websites and bought a ETM, so i only paid labor to replace and the software, which the dealer charged me $240

      Good-luck
