'98 V70 Price V70-XC70

Hi Guys:
I ve been a regular on the 700 forum, but the life on my '87 740 with 340k miles came to an end yesterday as a bread truck rear ended it to the point of no repair.I have a guy up the street selling a white '98 V70 for $7,200.I only looked at the wagon on the outside which looks ok and noticed that has cloth interior not very clean.Tomorrow I intend to go over to take a more detailed look. The guy says it has new brakes and rotors and that the timing belt was changed at 90K miles. What other items should I look into? Does the price seem fair or excessive?I never bought a used car before. My 80 240,my 87 740 and my daughters S40 were new when I purchased them...Tks for your opinions.

    Shop, Shop, Shop. V70-XC70

When you are in the market for a used car, buy what you would LIKE to have, not just what you need. There are a lot of V70's out there, including a few R modles. Compare and shop. Never tell a dealer/seller what you are willing to pay, just play with the asking price. Do not be in a hurry. You just might look at a MB with awd.

I agree with Bill about the T-Belt. As a result of this excessive neglect, I would question the vehicle as a whole.

Expect to put probably another $2000 into it to get it up to snuff.

If it were me, I would walk.

For pricing, try kbb.com, and move the price down a bit, they're always well behind the curve.

The cloth seems to wear better than the leather. More disturbing is the timing belt, it's SUPPOSED to be changed at 70k, letting it go to 90k is really playing with fire. What other maintenance items did he skimp on?

For problem areas see the surveys at Kino Velez's website http://kinovolvo.velez.ws/

Common trouble spots include the AC evaporator($$$$), brakes, ABS module ($$$), torque arm bushing aka upper engine mount, sway bar end links, air pump, oil leaks, thermostat, heater core, light bulbs, glove box latch, automatic transmission, especially if the fluid hasn't been changed, ignition switch, dash lights and trip computer. Make sure ALL the electrical gizmos work.

I thought servicing the timing belt on the 98 70 Series increased to 105K mi while timing belt service on 94.5-97 850s was 70K mi.

        Benfica..............buy it V70-XC70

because you like it.........not because you "need it"! That means shopping shopping around when your in the used car market. I looked 3 months before I bought the R wagon I have........I am glad it took that long because I got a car that I luved when I drove and was also in very very nice and well maintained condition. After having it 3 years and another 60K miles on it I can't complain. There IS a lot of used/abused junk out there!!!!!
