Advice on buying S80 T6 S80

Looking to replace on of my faithful older Volvos and locally found an S80 T6 with 73,000 miles, with asking price of $9,9000. This seems like a good price and owner say everthing is good on it except says, "but have trouble with computer, runs very good, miles not accurate because of computer but shows about 73000 miles,it will work off and on"

I cannot interpret what this means. Can anyone give insight into this comment and if S80 is a reliable automobile?

I have 86 740 and 91 940 that I do excellent preventative maintenance on (do most of my own work) and they have serviced me well with over 200,000k on them. I don't know much about the newer models and have reservations about them since Ford took over. My other option is a great buy on a 1998 BMW 740il for about the same price.

Thanks for your input,

Gary

    Advice on buying S80 T6 S80

I don't know what year you're looking at, but I have a 2002 S80 T6. It currently has about 52k on it. I've had lots of new cars of various makes (Acura, BMW, VW, Nissan), and the Volvo is BY FAR the worst new car I've owned. I recently posted about major oil leaks, coolant leaks and steering clamp malfunctions. My car has been regularly maintained and not overworked in any sense. It's possible this car was an unlucky aberration, but I am very disappointed with the quality of the design and engineering of the car (many smaller annoyances since I bought it - e.g., headlights burning out at 5k, software recall, insane climate control system, turning radius of a bus), and also (although not your issue) disappointed that Volvo refused to stand behind its warranty because I brought the car in to the dealer at 900 miles over the 50k basic warranty. Personally, I won't go near another Volvo again once I get rid of this one. My only advice is, if you are set on buying a T6, DON'T buy mine!

    Suggest do a search for 'V.A.D.I.S.' S80

Post-1998 Volvos are really not made for shade-tree mechanics.

    Nor are 7-Series BMWs.

Consumer Reports has the 99-00 S80 on it's "Used Cars to Avoid" list.

Consumer Reports also has the '97-'99 and '02-'03 7-Series on it's "Used Cars to Avoid" list.

In both cases the cars are relative bargains as used cars because the maintenance costs are so high.

Thanks for the information. I'll check it out. My son has an 850 and it has been a great car for him. I have worked on it for him. Maybe I should look at older model.
