The 'evil' Vadis system: Do I really need it? V70-XC70

I like working on my 97 850 and am thinking of buying a 98-99 FWD turbo. Have been told by several BB users to stick with a 98 and to stay away from the 99+ models because of the wireless throttle and Vadis system. From what I can gather Vadis is a diagnostic system on a DVD sold pirated and original on ebay in many different versions. What is the problem with a 99+ and Vadis? Is it the cost of the DVD? Setup? Getting the right year? I'm confused. Dick

Depending on what your needs are, you might be happy with a system from obd-2.com. If you need/want/can afford a full dealer level system then the Vadis is for you. Good luck.

The 99-00 models were the first generation of wireless throttle. Not the most reliable system, it was replaced for 01.
VADIS is too new and very expensive. The cost of doing your own diagnostics and software downloads is not user friendly. Ask any indy shop. Even the dealers dislike charging $100+ for a download, but they do anyway! Vadis, like OBDII readers will come down in price, but initally you will also need a laptop computer to talk to your car.

You will not only need a lap top but you will need a VCT 2000 and cabling to connect to your car. I just recently stepped up for all of this stuff and here is what you are looking at, Dell laptop with serial ports $1200.00, VCT2000 and cables $1400.00, bootleg disc $200.00. All that and I still cannot talk to the car, currently working those bugs out. Yes it is an overpriced pain in the butt, it is also necessary if you are going to run your own Volvo shop.

Hi Rule308...I'm assuming you have a real name...but anyhow...

I tried to respond to you once before, and though my screen shows three responses (one of which would be mine), I don't see three responses. On your bootleg disk, when you installed it, did it also install the VCT2000 update? When I installed mine, it installed that program as well, setting up a separate icon. You have to run the update, with the cable connected to a 99+ car. Also, make certain that your baud rate from your computer to the car is set high enough. The update, when installed, sets the baudrate at nothing, therefore no communication. You wouldn't have recieved that info from Volvo with a bootleg disk.

Hope this helps,
Chris

On your bootleg disk, do you have the VCT 2000 update? When I installed VADIS, it installed this at the same time, with its own little separate icon. You have to run the update, with the cable hooked up to a 99+ car to "initiate" vehicle communication. Also, check that your baud rate is fast enough, when its initialized via the program it resets the baud rate to nothing, something you wouldn't know about if you didn't get the disks from Volvo.

Hope this helps,

Chris
