Front End Noises When Hitting Bumps 850 1993

Hello Again Lads,

I've read a few recent posts regarding front end "knocking" noises and searched the site a bit. But I'm still not sure about the source of the clunking noise from the front of my '93 GLT.

Today I took the car to a pretty mechanically astute friend. I wanted him to ride with me a bit and listen for the noise. Another buddy wanted to listen, so the three of us went for a spin.

Funny thing. The noise was gone with the additional weight of two passegers. When I dropped them off, the clunking knocking noise was back.

So now we're thinking struts. I have 73,000 miles on the car and I believe the struts have never been changed.

How often should they be serviced? Since the noise went away with an extra 200 pounds in the passenger seat, are the struts obviously the problem?

Also, the front right tire is wearing really fast on the inside of the tread.

Thanks if anyone has some advice.

- Thumbs

Check the strut braces, have the mechanic put the car up on the hoist and pull down on the wheel.

The other day I went to Sears Auto Center (only place open on Sunday, small town) because of this noise. It had got so bad, the smallest bump in the pavement set it off. All 4 of my front caliper bolts were gone. Totally missing. The only things holding my brakes together were the clips. I couldn't even drive it home, I had to have it towed. (Someone had done a brake job the year before and they told me to have them fix it.) I recommend you do get it checked out.

I forgot to say my sister had taken it into another shop who said the struts needed replacing. However, since getting the brakes fixed there is -0- problem, so obviously it wasn't the struts.

Sway bar links can be checked easily by wiggling them to see if they are loose, bent or disconnected at either end. In 120K miles I have put on about 4 of them on my 1995. Since you are getting uneven tire wear you need to find out if a ball joint is loose. If so you may be looking at a major accident. Uneven tire wear can't be caused by the sway bar links, though they can cause plenty of noise. Misalignment can cause uneven tire wear but alignment should include checking for damaged parts including ball joints. If not a ball joint then strut bushings are likely to be the source of noise. It's not unusual for suspension noises to come and go on different roads and loads.

I had a simmilar noise on mt 95 855. Replaced the sway bar end links from ebay, and the noise got worse. Wound up replaceing the spring cushions (ebay) was an afternoon job with the help of a friend. No more noise. Good Luck, Chuck.

the knocking noise is also a symptom of worn ball joints, especially over bumps. The fact that you say it disappears with you have passengers says ball joints to me.

Most probably the stabilizer bar links.

They are a weak link in this front suspension.

My car, with 100,000 miles on it, has had them replaced three times.

If you've got 73,000 miles on yours, and they've never been replaced, I would lay money on that being your problem.

Besides, they are cheap and easy to replace.

At 73,000 miles, your struts should be fine.

As to tire wear--you simply need an alignment.

So the stabilizer bars wear out in some fashion? Or is it the bushings that go south.

Does the replacement part fit both sides?

Also, I read somewhere you could disconnect the stabilizer link to test if it's really the problem. Izzat so?

      Thanks for your patience.

Yes, the sway bar links are always suspect in front end issues. My front end creaked slightly moving the steering wheel, and while riding it continued to creak fairly loud. The fix was to replace the drivers side sway bar link.

I am experiencing a similar clunking noise when starting, stopping and going over bumps. If it is the sway bar links, does anyone know if it's covered under warrenty?
