XC 90 T5 AWD gas mileage XC90 2005

I bought a 2005 XC90 T5 AWD about a month ago. I've been averaging 12.7 mpg despite driving with a "light" foot once I noticed the abyssmal fuel consumption. I called the dealer and he chalked it up to "break-in." Is something wrong with my car or is the claimed 17 city mpg just an optimistic estimate? What's the usual actual mpg that everyone is seeing for around-the- town driving?

I have 15,000 mi. on a '04 T-5 and consistently get 17mpg around town. On open road trips, I get between 23 and 24 mpg, depending on the amount of headwind.
I am sure a key to this is your make of tire and the air pressure. I always keep my pressure just below the max for a loaded XC-90 since it helps me flatten out the curves.

Forgot to mention re: 15,000 mi. T-5 road mileage of 23-24 mpg...........
formulation of gasoline is important and grade used; I find some improvement when using 93 octane. You can always improve mileage if you turn off cruise control when approaching a hill that may cause downshifting...just to lighten the throttle load a bit.

First the facts, then my opinion.

Fact: Gasoline formulation varies from state to state, and even within this state. Mileage will vary with the formula. On a recent trip I saw almost 20% difference in fuel economy depending on where I bought the fuel. (The best stuff came from PQ, Canada) Your mileage will vary with the weather. As BTC said, ambient temperature is important. My mileage dropped by 1/3 in the recent sub-zero temperatures.

Opinion: You live miles down an unplowed/unpaved road, and since you are on call at the hospital and your mother is an invalid you need to be able to get in and out. So you bought a truck. A 20 year old Power Wagon would do just as well, plus you could plow with it. If you cared about fuel economy you wouldn't try to use a truck like a car. End of opinion.

If you are using the computer to show you what the gas milage is, reset it the next time you tank up. Better yet, use the trip odometer and devide it by the gallons used - more accurate. If it is very cold out, remember that your milage will decrease because of cold oils and grease. Time to take a road trip for one tank and get highway miles comparison.
"break in" is dealer speak for "tough luck". New cars don't break in like cars used to in the good old days.

    Consumer Reports XC90 2005

...tested the T6 and reported 15 mpg combined, real-world, city and highway.

I have the T5 motor in a somewhat lighter car, and my gas mileage has been a pretty constant 22 1/2 mpg for the last 155,000 miles. The mileage didn't get any better as the car "broke in" or any worse as the car aged.

With just a driver onboard, the XC90 weighs about 2 1/2 tons. I wouldn't expect miracles, at least in around-town driving. This may be why the majority of the XC90s sold in $5/gallon gas Europe are diesels.
