Seat Belts Won't Retract Smoothly 98 S70

Has anyone else come across this problem? My front door panels are so cut up from the buckle being caught in the door when I shut it. I can't imagine there is anything I can do except replace the belt assembly or try to be more careful

Try to learn to listen for the tell-tale "clunk" when the belt buckle hits the door frame and don't slam the door on it! I'm on my second driver's door panel (first was replaced under warranty, along with the seatbelt mechanism) and that one has been patched/repaired. Also, when it fails to retract, I pull it out all the way and then let it retract. It's usually OK for a while. Mine is really no better or worse now than when the car was new.

I think that Volvo might still warranty the seat belt mechanism "for life" so if it's giving you a lot of trouble you might want to visit your dealer.

What a pain! We all have this problem and it is due to the design. Pull the belt all the way out to make sure it is not twisted. I have taken the panel off mine an sprayed the mechanism with silicon lube, smells good, but it only had a marginal effect.
It would be nice to tighten the spring works, but I haven't had time to look at that. It's too cold out in the garage. If I find out, I will post a solution.

      Just don't wait for me,
