Tires 850 1994

Greetings-
I'm researching new tires for my wagon. My car came to me with Pirelli P205/55 R15. Volvo recommends P205/50z R16. What's the difference between the two sizes? Would it be faux pas to put American tires on my Swede?
Thanks
Lucas

We have a 95 850 wagon which has gone through its share of tires. I have run Yokohama’s, Toyo’s, Michelin’s and Pirelli’s. I am currently running a set of BF Goodrich Traction TA’s.

I bought them on TireRack.com. The price was phenomenal! Ride and wear are better than any other tire I’ve owned. I strongly recommend researching the Traction TA before you buy anything else.

I have the BFG traction T/As on my 95-850 and on a Ford Taurus 97. I am also very happy with them on both cars. On the Volvo I also had good experience with Michelin MXV4plus. I think the BFG rides a bit firmer. I also had Toyo Proxes TPT, and was not happy with those for the mushy ride and sloppy handling. All are/were H rated tires, 15 inch.

The "R" part of the tire designation indicates the diameter of wheel it fits. You can't put R16 tires on 15" wheels. Unless you're planning on replacing your wheel with 16" ones I'd recommend you stay with the same size tires you have.

I have used Toyo Proxis, Fulda Extremo. Michelin (mine came with the Pilot Sport), I used those a few times. The ride is great with those, but they are too expensive, and only last 25K. I now have 2 BF Goodrich g-force sport. I have thought I'd like to try Cooper Zeon. All come in the 205-50-ZR16. I tried Yokohama in a 205-55-ZR16 but they rubbed the liner off of my wheel wells in tight turns..so I had to trade them in. The Cooper Zeon, BF Goodrich, and Fulda are all lower priced than the Michelin. I don't think I've tried the Pirelli.
