Heater Hoses 850 1994

I'm in the process of changing the heater hoses on my '94 850 Turbo. Got the old o' rings and spacers out of the fire wall fittings but I can't figure how to get the new 'rings and spacers in. Also, the o'ring kit supplied by Volvo seems to indicate (instructions are a bit cryptic) that I should be able to remove a portion of the old retainer, inside the firewall connector, so I can get the new o'rings and spacer installed, as well as use the new, yellow, clips supplied with the o'ring kit. As it stands now the new clips will not seat in the firewall fittings as they extend too far.
Anyone done this????
Thx
Steve

Never mind. The "shoulder" I was looking at was the big spacer. I was afraid to pry on it while the fitting was in the car. Ended up removing the firewall fitting (heater core and accellerator peddal too) so I could get a good look at the insides.
