98 S70 - vibration from steering? replace steering rack??? need advice S70

Hello All

I habe a 98 S70 with 138000 miles.

I have replaced the front struts and rear shock, the brakes and rotors are in perfect shape, and have a different set of tires and rims on it right now.

This is the problem.

When turnning or braking my steering vibrates sometimes lightly and sometimes more heavily. It is NOT the alignment, balancing or the brakes i have had them checked throughly!!!

My volvo mechanic tells me it could be the steering rack as he can feel a little play in the rack if he moves the tires side to side, he also suggests replacing the front ball joints as i have been hearing a "clunking" noise from the front.

Should i replace the ball joints first to see if the steering vibration goes away?

The vibration is inferequent, it comes and goes...............

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

at 138K your control arms (the ball joint is embedded in them) need to be replaced most likely. I would do the tie rod ends at the same time since you will need an alignment. Don't forget the sway bar links, they go every 30K or so and cause rattling type feeling/sound. BTW, are you sure about your rotors? the can look like new, but have even the most slight warp and you will feel it when you brake, particularily at higher speeds. Volvo rotors warp very easily, especially if they have EVER been turned/resurfaced. For supsension parts, I always use genuine and not that scan-tech stuff cause it doesn't seem to last as long.

at that mileage you will have play in your steering rack, but that should only cause play in the steering wheel, not vibration.
