1998 S70 GLT Transmission Downshift S70 1998

I own a 1998 S70GLT with 86,000. I have put 5,000 on since purchase but I only drive the car once a week and put on 50 miles. The car is garaged and worked fine until a week ago when I noticed that when I would slow down from the car would noticebly downshift to the lower gear and then upshift and then downshift. It never did this before. It did this each time I would use it until this weekend when I drove on a longer trip. 100 miles one way and halfway through the trip it did not do the abrupt downshift and upshift when letting my foot off the gas pedal. It worked as usual for the remainder of the trip and I have parked it in the garage and will not use until the weekend. I am fearful that something is going amiss with the trans or a relay, etc. Any insight short of taking it to the dealer would be appreciated. I don't know if the Trans fluid has ever been changed. jim

Good place to start is with the trans fluid flush. With the miles you have it would be worth the replacement.

i replace the trans fluid on my 98 S70 (138000 miles) every 25000 miles and did replace it immidiately when i bought it with 62000 miles.

The pnp switch on the trans can also be a cause of the problem you are having but that is an expensive repair.

I would suggest you drive the car a little more than 50 miles to see if it behaves the same way. Sometimes not driving a car can also cause the trans to act funny and shift hard.

PS: My S70 trans sometime shifts hard during acceleration or decelration, the posts i have read chalks this up to "normal" trans behavior.

Unless it starts slipping or getting stuck in a gear i would not worry about it too much............

Good luck
