Euro rails 850 1994

Well, I finally got my manual transmission Volvo 850 wagon. Now my problem is that I don't have any euro rails. Any help would be well recieved.

You can buy them here:

You may also want to consider the Volvo/Thule "removable racks" (I've never heard of anyone who actually removes their racks). Eurorails plus cross bars will run you $680 plus installation. The removable rack costs $176. I have Volvo removable racks, and they are quite nice -- they only touch the black rain gutters and have pins that engage a hole under the upper door grame.

I had some problems with water leaking in initially at one door. Despite rather bulky apperance and two seals, the Volvo's weather sealing is less effective than any car I've owned, which always had roof racks. I was able to fix it by adding some stick-on weather stripping under the existing weather seal on the door frame. Bit of a hassle, but you risk having worse leak problems with a diy eurorail installation....

Removable racks are functionally equivalent to rail systems, and stronger than some. So really, you are looking at $500 additional for cosmetics, which you may or may not find worthwhile. Eurorails are certainly more desirable, but it seems a bit sketchy to add on after the fact or dyi.

Jacob--if you buy Eurorails for your wagon, get those made for the V-70 X-country. They will fit the 850's. They are thicker, have a different (and nicer) finish, and really add to the artistic profile of your car. The originals are very thin looking, and, since the price is about the same for either set, go for the one that really makes your car look nice. Installation is pretty much straight forward until you come to the trim that comes up along the window posts. This piece lifts right out and is no problem. The problem is that you have to cut it back to where the top end fits under the front end of the rail. I didn't find the instructions that came with the rails very helpful in telling me exactly where to cut it. Remember, you don't want that piece of window trim running too far back under the Eurorail because it has to pull out if and when you change out the windshield. And, when installing the rails, pay particular attention to the rubber sealer plugs that comes with the kit, that you push down in the holes in the roof and that you sink the screws into to hold the rails on. I screwed up on one and didn't know it, and now it leaks a tiny little bit every so often. And I thought I was being very careful when I installed mine. Dick

Dick - which V70 XC are you referring to? I assume 2001 or later, the new ones in showroom nowdays, since '98 - '01(?) are are basically same as 850s?

Thanks
