Oil deposits / oil change interval V70-XC70 2000

I did my first oil change on our V70 at 90 000km (done by Volvo workshop before) and found brown rubber-like deposit on oil stick, filler cap and in the filler on the valve cover. It does not look very nice and I assume there is more of it inside the engine. The car has been run on high-quality syntetic oil since new... I suspect that the 20 000km oil change interval on the -00 and later engines is simply too long? Or is there any other reasonable cause? The car is mostly used for commuting typically 30km. Would it be a good idea to go for 10 000km oil change interval instead? All suggestions are appreciated.

A light deposit at that mileage isn't really abnormal.
I'd get about 1500 km on the new oil, and send in an oil sample. Then you will know if there is any antifreeze or fuel contamination (the most likely causes of oil sludging). After that, consider using Auto-Rx. If you want a quicker flush, AMSOIL and BG make the best I know of.

I've been running AMSOIL synthetics in my turbos (and other cars) for over 25 years, changing turbo oils at 10,000 miles. No problems yet.

Still I'm a bit puzzled that the engine in my 15 year old Renault 19 is shiny after 220 000 km. But that car has always got new oil every 10 000km. I believe the oil degradation in the V70 accelerated quickly in the last part of the service interval. I will change next time at 10000 and if it looks fine I may try 15000 km. I'm not so concerned about the deposit if it just stops building up further. But I would of course prefer if the engine was as clean as the Renault

I've used Auto-RX in my wifes V70 T5 (29k miles) and my Jeep. The stuff is amazing (www.auto-rx.com).

Thanks for the advices. I'll ignore the Volvo service plan and change oil at 10000km for now on. Lets se what it does to the deposit.. If its still there after a couple of changes I'll consider the cleaning.
The idea is definitely to keep the car much longer than 150000 km

I would go for the 10K oil change. Remember to change the oil cap gasket once in a while. Clean out all of the visible gunk, your driving is hard on the engine, barely getting up to operating temperature before cooling off again.
Besides, after a couple of oil changes, you will notice if the old oil still looks good and possibly lessen the frequency of the changes. 20000Km is much too long, unless you drive lots of long distances.
You might also ignore the milage altogether and change the oil according to the calendar, at least twice a year - spring and fall.

    Hi Erik,

You might want to consider running some AutoRx through the engine to clean out the debris left by the extended oil change interval (way to long). I would not suggest going any higher than what you mentioned (10k KM) between oil changes, regardless of what you use for oil.

I believe you add the Rx to the oil and then change it after 2,500 miles (4k KM) to drain all the gunk the Rx will remove from the engine.

Volvo extending the change intervals is partly environmental and partly to help lower the cost of ownership. I would suggest, the cost of ownership would be reduced in the early years, but if you keep the car past 150k or so, you pay it all back in major component replacement cost.
