O2 sensors S70 1998

A while back (September), I posted on O2 sensors. We replaced the forward O2 sensor, and I replaced three of the vacuum elbows (since I found vacuum errors can give P0172 as an OBDII error). Needless to say, I still have the check engine light on. Today, a mechanic suggested that it was the oil from my K&N air filter, fouling the MAF. Anyone care to touch this?

i know ford has a problem with filter oil on those amms. i wouldn't be suprised if that's the case with yours. any coating the wire gets while running is gonna lower the voltage output to the ecu. good luck, chuck.

In my opinion you would have to put a helluva lot of oil onto the filter element for that to be the case. Did you change the rear sensor as well? Even Volvos fault trace info on o2 sensor codes is vauge at best. I have three Volvos that do not have K/N filters but my Toyota truck does and I have never had any problems with it.And keep in mind that the fuel and ignition systems are very similar.

Here's where we are on this repair - new air filter to replace the K&N, the OBD II diagnostics - Volvo specific - indicated Mass Air Sensor, the generic OBDII indicated P0172, O2 sensor. The forward O2 sensor was replaced, engine light came back, same error code, the Mass Air Sensor was replaced this last week, CEL came back on the same day. I'm not sure what the code is, and won't know until tomorrow when the car goes back to the mechanic that did the Mass Air Sensor. Oh, and yes, the CEL has been reset between each of these steps, so it's not just "still on". I have looked (visual inspection) of all my vacuum lines, and replaced three of the little rubber elbows - the one nearest the turbo was dry rotting. So possibilities?

I was also wondering what kind of around-town fuel mileage people are seeing with s70 GLT's - I calculated mine today - 18.2 mpg, which seems low. Not sure of highway, I don't travel that way often.

        josh,

I've used a K&N on my GLT for over 5 years w/o any problems.

My mileage is about 22 in town and about 28-9 on the highway.

CHECK your thermostat, it can fail around 70K and will keep your car in warm-up mode far too long. Mileage can suffer.

Other suspects are the fuel filter, spark plugs & wires, etc.

        Bryan
