'93 850 engine dies while driving. A/C or electrical problem? 850

Over the summer here in Houston, my 1993 850 (110K miles) died a few times - once while at stop sign, once while parked about one minute after starting it, once while driving 5 mph in a parking lot, and once while I was driving 50 mph on a service road. In the first 3 instances, the A/C was on high, but in the last instance the A/C was on but turned to low. When the car dies, it seems like an electric problem (there is no stuttering or jerking; the car comes to a smooth, decelerating stop and I didn't feel that the power steering or braking power was lost). All the dashboard lights flash on. In all but the first case, I was able to put the car back in park and it re-started immediately. In the first case, it took a few times, but then the car started back up. Any suggestions as to what may be the problem?

I had the same exact problem, it would just stall out randomly when I was going slow < 10mph or at a stop sign. I had the dealership (yeah I couldn't figure it out) look at it and said it was the CMP, and they replaced it. Hasn't stalled out since. ALSO a problem on the 93/94 is the tach sensor cord goes right by the coil wires. MAKE SURE they are seperate..this can cause you to stall out if they touch / get near each other (not sure) just have heard.

Hey, my 92 850 has started doing the same thing. Whats a CMP? I'll check the plug wires and tach wire issue.

Thanks,

Toast

CMP is cam position sensor, don't ask me why.

Hi Erik

Where are the tacho and coil wires?

One frequently mentioned fix for this is to replace the fuel injector relay. It is behind the fuze box. Some sensors can also cause this if they fail, but will typically set a code (e.g. cam position sensor).

As an intermediate problem, it can be very difficult to trace. My car was doing this, but I had a cam position sensor code set (I assume codes have been checked and you have none). I replaced both the cam position sensor (because the code was set) and the fuel injection relay (because this is frequently mentioned as a intermittent stalling problem), and it hasn't happened since. The fuel injector relay can be disassembled and the switch closed to place it in an "always on" condition, but this is a safety concern. If your car does it at regular intervals (i.e. daily) rather than every couple of weeks, you could try this and see if it stops. Mine would sometimes go for weeks without an occurance, so I didn't think it would be prudent to test in this manner.

I don't have any codes for the CMP. The only codes I'm getting are from B1 4-1-4 ((passenger's compartment/driver's side sensor intake fan blocked)
and for A1 3-1-3 (Faulty signal from gear position sensor (PNP)), 1-1-4 (Program selector open circuit or short circuit to supply) and 1-3-4 (Faulty load signal from ignition control module). With the A1 codes, I'm not sure if they were cleared from the last time I had transmission work done and I'm not sure if they are from a "short cut" that my mechanic did last time to solve the problem that forced me to use the shift-lock override button to switch out of park every time. Hopefully its just the fuel injection relay - that seems an easier fix.

Check & clean battery terminal connections. I had one a little loose that caused problems.
