850 drivers door problem 850

having a minor problem with my 850's drivers side door. opened it the other day, and heard something "snap," a metallic breaking noise. opened and shut the door, seemed ok, no more noises. later i realized what had broken. the door no longer opens with any resistance, it just swings wide open, so i guess the piece that stops it halfway or so came undone, snapped or otherwise needs replacing. does anyone know what this part is or how much it costs?

thanks

Hello, just joined the board and saw your post as i was scanning through. Hopefully you've been able to use some of the others' advice to come to a less costly resolution than me... I had this exact thing happen on my 97 850 about two weeks ago. I took it to a volvo mechanic who said that he may be able to weld the doorstop piece or, depending on the condition, it may need to be replaced. He wouldn't know until he "got in there." As it turned out, he replaced it. Cost for parts was $41. Cost for labor was $97.50 for 1.5 hours. It was an annoying problem...still not sure if it was $140 worth of annoying or not.

We fixed mine yesterday in about 15min we pulled the door off, cleaned the area and welded it with a mig welder, painted it,put the door back on and it's good to go.I know not everyone has a welder, but a lot of people do or have access to one.I used to cringe when I opened and closed the door, now I smile.

I replaced the 'door stop assembly' on my 850 a couple of weeks ago.
The part was about $35 at FCP Groton. I don't know what the dealer price would be.
Easy to do - most of the time is spent removing/reinstalling the door trim panel (followed Haynes manual instructions). Replacement of the door stop assembly is self explanatory once you gain access to it.

The tension bar that holds the door open in certain positions and prevents it from opening too widely broke on my 1997 850 recently, but I don't find this part anywhere (FCPGroton, foreignpartsonline.com, etc.). Guess the dealer is the only place to go? :(

This problem is common to the entire 850/70-series line. I fixed mine by following these instructions:

http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/door-stay_fix.html

Total cost: $6 for nuts and bolts, and about an hour of labor. Tip: get new drill bits. You'll also need some help re-mounting the door onto its hinge posts, but there's no aligning to do, so it's just brainless grunt-work. Fishing your fingers through the hole in the A-pillar to position the nuts will be the most troublesome part of the job. Patience and *decaf* will both help with that. ;)

it is not the door weld problem that your link describes, the welds are fine, and the door is still sturdy. its the little arm that applies tension to the door when opening it. as far as i can tell it is not load bearing and the door opens fine without it, but doesn't "stop halfway", just swings open.

Remove the door stay assembly and inspect it, maybe it just needs to be replaced. It shouldn't take you 10 minutes to remove and inspect it. You can get a replacement from FCPGroton.com.

Oh well, I tried. Good luck with it.

(Hmmm... I wonder if you can get a better idea of what needs fixing by removing the door, as described in that link.)

This is a very common problem on 850s. Don't do anything until you go to this website: http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/body.html Read John Cook's 'bloody marvelous door fix' I followed his instructions, had the problem easily fixed in less than an hour for less than $1.00 in parts! Go to the dealer and they will want $500 to fix...

Is that door travel limiter mechanism still there? You can use a flashlight to inspect the door hinge area. Compare both front doors. You have to remove the door interior panel/molding to remove that mechanism. Takes a Torx bit on the body mount point and an 11mm wrench on the bolts in the door. You have to get the mechanism from the dealer. Good luck.

it appears that everything is still there. we end do you suppose might have given out, the part attatched to the frame or the part underneath the door trim? any idea as to cost, because this may be one of those things that could go unrepaired, unless the mechanism is load bearing?

Call the dealer's parts dept and ask for the price, then call the service dept and ask them for their cost. Then start taking the door panel off yourself...
