AM I RETARDED ??????????????

After 140,000 km my upper engine mount finally gave way and yes there is more vibration when it doesn't work as designed. Read all the posts here and off to the hardware store to buy my 1" pipe flanges bolt & nut and washers OH yes I picked up the new bushing at the dealer, after work I fiquired i can spare a half hour for the task, some even said in thier posts 10 minutes after all I'm not a pro so 30 min. Well once it was too dark to work I said i'll try tomorrow with the biggest bolt that will fit through the bushing I tried again today with the same result Can't get that bushing in more than half way no matter how much force i use the old bushing did pop out once i hacksawed through it carefully. What do the dealers have a 100 tonne press in the back?

feels good to rant even if i am 6 hours older

Some posters mentioned buying the firewall bracket with the bushing installed and just changed the whole unit. Has anyone done that? They mentioned that there was not a big price difference.

nasty change out though...and interestingly my dealer wanted about $100 just to press the bushing into the bracket! needless to say i did it myself on the car

No you are not retarded

I have the same problem at 54K!!!
Ordered one from ipdusa.com

Does not require any special tool to install because it comes as a unit:

http://ipdusa.com/ProductsCat.aspx?CategoryID=256&NodeID=4720&RootID=629

Buying the Volvo bushing requires a special press tool, and it is a pain, IPDUSA is much better. Just requires regular wrenches.

Return the bushing to dealer and tell them you are not

hercules and cannot press it in. Hope they take it back, but anyway for $8.00, you my as well keep it, unless it is still in the box.

For a few more dollars you get the ipd version which is:

- better polyurethrane
- easily installed with ordinary tool
- and the best part is it takes only 20 minutes of your time.

ok..heres the low down..i put a volvo one in using some 10mm bolt, two nuts, some washers and somw wodden disks cut out of 3/4" pine...

i DID reduce the diameter marginally using some oxide sand paper (and increase the taper on the end) and i DID grease it before insertion....

IF i had to do it again i would go genuine again, but would use my lathe (didnt have it then) to skim a couple of thou off the diameter...

honesty it IS possible, took me maybe an hour of swearing before i took the time to make the disks up to fit..then took 10 mins...no special tools, not built like a gorila...

Thanks you all for your responses, I was thinking the same as kick to shave the bushing a hair or two and will try that this week-end Ed i called the dealer also about the bracket with the bushing and they want $105. plus taxes (that is 16% here in canada) the poly bushing takes about a week for delivery so hopefully the shaving willl work otherwise i'll go the poly bushing route

this is a great board

i did look and believe the v70 uses a different bush, perhaps slightly larger....certainly we just sanded ours agressively with aluminium oxide paper and it went in no trouble

Volcan,
Try calling a couple of Volvo dealers that advertise on the internet for prices (bracket w/ bushing) as the local dealers usually are VERY high with their prices. Mailorder will save you at least 30% or more.

Make sure it's square with the opening, tapered end in, and it should go without too much fuss. Beware, lots of folks complain about harshness with the poly bushing. Do a search on the board. Vibration, etc.

Well shaving the bushing ever so slightly worked but the last inch went in thanks to my trusty rubber mallet and it was worth it I guess the old bushing was really worn because now I feel like thier is no engine that is how much the vibration has been reduced
Thanks everyone for your input

Happy Motoring

good job! - now NEXT time get a three/two leg gear puller FIRST..it makes the job much easier and removes the need for the mallet!

PS I now own a lathe and the little SOB is gonna get 'trimmed to fit' next time..., if i dont just lathe me up a chunk o' rubber to do it from scratch..
