S60 R 2004 Tire Feathering Issue S60

Despite numerous alignments by dealer vehicle continues to feather front tires. Car now has 7000 miles. Dealer has said its the way it is with AWD and high performance tires - it's not bad, live with it. Tire shop says not normal, alignment issue.

What is acceptable? What are actual alignment specs which should cure this issue? ANYONE ELSE HAVING A SIMILAR PROBLEM?? I am getting very frustrated after 5 or more alignments already.

    S60 R 2004 Tire Feathering Issue S60

    Hi.
While I don't have any experience with the S60R, my 99 V70R AWD has never had a feathering problem. Not only is it AWD, but I have used both Bridgestone and Goodyear max performance summer tires, with only short tire life to show for it. Exactly what you might expect, nothing more.
The Volvo factory alignment specs are probably not the issue. The alignment can be within spec, but if the right and left wheels are on opposite edges of the specification it some times can cause problems. Unless the car keeps going out of spec, the dealer is probably just wasting their time and yours by repeatedly aligning the car. In addition, at least from my experience, once a tire is worn like that, they pretty much stay that way regardless of whatever corrective action you might have taken. I'm curious about your driving style as well. Fairly low speed turns with a lot of powered understeer can definitely feather the front tires. As I remember, the Haldex AWD system still sends most of the power the front wheels.
You may consider taking advantage of the tire warranty. Obviously you have tried to correct any mechanical problem with the car. You may be able to get the tires replaced if there is the possibility of a defect. Try a Google search under the manufacturer and model of your tire + "defect" or "defective" and see what comes up.

    Good luck,

    Mark

      Mark,

Thank you for your response. I am not an agressive driver, nor do I push the car. Most of driving has been interstate highway miles. Why do you think the dealer is wasting their time? Should alignment be at the minimum toe specs? I just ruined a tire by hitting an object on the highway and within 200 miles the new tire is beginning to show feathered wear! I agree one worn that way the pattern will continue. Yes, most of the power is to the front wheels. I want the issue fixed first, then I want new tires. Other than this problem we love the car.

      Any other ideas out there??

      Ed

        Hi Ed,
Well, we've covered the basics, I guess. The reason I suggested that the dealer is wasting your time is that if you do the same thing twice without an improvement, any subsequent efforts are logically not going to improve the situation. I can suggest a couple of remedies, perhaps. One has to do with the alignment procedure. If it was me, I would have the shop align the car with the drivers weight in the seat. The heavier the driver, the more important this is. Most shops do this, either by putting a mechanic in the seat while the technician is adjusting the toe in, or substituting weights for the driver. About the toe in, it should be as close to zero as possible, without approaching toe out.
It's kind of a stretch, but I would also consider doing the alignment with the ignition on and the suspension switch in the position that you favor most of the time. You never know what subtleties may be having an effect on the suspension. Also, consider taking the car to an alignment and/or frame shop and spending $100 to get an independent opinion. A second set of eyes may find something that the first set has completely overlooked.
