Buying 99-01 V70 wagon-need advice V70-XC70

I am considering purchasing a pre-owned Volvo V70 wagon that is a 1999, 2000, or 2001 model from a dealership. Are there any maintenance issues I should know about?

Thanks,
Kim

My lease is up on my 2001 V-70 and here is what we had issues with:

We experienced a bad ABS sensor early on in the lease and was replaced under warranty.

Electronic throttle unit went a few months ago, also replaced under warranty.

My advice is look for a 2002. The 2001 was the first year for that style of V70.

Keep it simple V70-XC70

From what I read on this board, many failures and maintenance problems are related to fancy stuff. Automatic climate control. Automatic transmission. Traction control. AWD. I can only imagine the problems that might arise if a navigation system should die far from home...confine the whiz-bang options to your washing machine. Keep the car simple.

If you're buying from a volvo dealership, then buy a certified volvo, it might cost a little more but is "piece of mind insurance".

DO NOT BUY from a nonvolvo dealership.

The '99-'01 have common failures with the ETS(electronic throttle system), ABS module and AC evaporator leaks. These repairs are labor intensive and expensive, from $1000-$1500 each depending on the area you live. A certified volvo would come with a great warranty that would cover all these, thus you're protected.

I have heard a few people say not a buy a car from a non-Volvo dealership and I was wondering why.

Why is not a good idea not to buy from a non-volvo dealer V70-XC70

A volvo well maintained and in great running condition presumably would be traded in for a new model of the same make or something comparable ( a trade up).

A volvo that's giving a lot of headaches to the owner because of frequent expensive repairs, would be traded down for something "more reliable and less expensive", ie. a Ford or a Toyota. This dealer would place the car on the lot for resale with no repairs, and no warranties.

A volvo dealership would take in a trade-in and have the car looked over by their techs and be given a score: thumb's UP or DOWN. Thumb's down vehicles are sold at auction, where the used car dealers pick them up and put up for sale as-is with no repairs.

The thumbs up vehicle, the dealer would keep, perform some repairs to bring it up to par and then the car is placed on the lot for sale as a certified vehicle with warranty.
