Do I have to use Volvo synthetic ATF Fluid or can I use a subsitute: Mobil 1? V70-XC70 1999

Hello Everyone,

I have 1999 XC that uses synthetic ATF. I have been told by my local Volvo dealer, that if I want to change the ATF, I must use Volvo synthetic ATF which costs $15 plus per quart. The car has approximately a 12 quart capacity, so I commented that it would cost $180 just to change the fluid. The Volvo rep. said "no", you just drain the transmission and approximately 4 quarts will drain out, so you'll only spend $60 (only!).

Question: Can I use an alternate synthetic ATF such as Mobil 1 or must I use Volvo ATF to avoid damaging the transmission?

Question: Is it proper to just drain out 4 quarts of ATF or is the better practice to flush out the entire system - approx. 12 quarts?

Question: If I can use an alternative sysnthetic ATF fluid, what would your recommend and how much would it cost per quart?

Thanks to all who respond. I appreciate your assistance.

Hugh

My references show you can use Dexron III V70-XC70 1999

And you aren't required to use Volvo ATF.

I'm biased, and would change all the fluid, using AMSOIL synthetic ATF. Takes about a case, and will cost about $93 plus tax and shipping at retail, or about $68 plus tax and shipping if you set up an AMSOIL account ($10 for 6 months as preferred customer).

Or, you could use Mobil 1 ATF.
