Lots of problems, fault codes, descriptions V70-XC70 1999

For the past couple of years, I've had every imagineable error light come up on the dash. They typically go off after 3 starts, which i've been told means the system reboots. There are currently none on, I'm certain that this is short lived.

I had a few events that led me to bring the car in and get a code scan. Here were the codes:

2-3-2 ; PO1550 ; PO1618

My understanding is that each of these is a speed sensor error, each from a different location - ABS, Engine, and Control Module. Is this accurate?

Here were the symptoms that led me to get the codes scanned:

ETS light on. (not unusual for the past 2 years). ABS and Brake lights come on simultaneously. (ABS light has come on the past 2 years, regularly). RPM's are effected very slightly, but I think just the tach, not the actual revs. Next, the Speedo goes to zero, and the odo and trip miles goto ----- across the board. Then, when coming from a stop, the engine revved but the tranny was maybe in the wrong gear - it almost seemed like an exaggerated version of winter mode. Then the tranny lurched into proper function (or gear). At this point, the speedo came back, the ABS and brake lights turned off, and the tranny failure light came on. Car drove fine. Check engine light also on throughout this period, never off. 2 days later, my wife called me and said that the car 'did something really loud and bad' when she shifted from park to reverse. Again, seems like maybe the speed sensor affected the tranny shifting? ???

I've had some other strange things the past few years:

1) Brakes feel funny. Wife has said she's had to jump on them twice at times. To me, this seems like ABS speed sensor. I've read about the problems on the ABS systems, and Victor Rocha's fix. But because of these other issues, and the codes that came up, I'm thinking this was caused by ABS speed sensors.

2) Sometimes, when I'm cruising, and I tap the brakes, the car revs very slightly before dropping off to idel rev. This happens without my foot on the gas. When trying to stop at high speeds, this is an uncomfortable thing.

The guy I brought it to wasn't the dealer. I don;t like my dealer, they are a long drive, and I knew the code scans would be accurate anyway. But he suggested I goto the dealer. I'd like to try and isolate the problem first. I need to replace the pads / rotors, and I figure that's a good time to check the wheel speed sensors. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Meatpile, this is Victor.

You have two different problems in your car. There are two components in your 99 V70 that will eventually fail in all the vehicles.

#1 is the ETS, all of them will eventually fail. That's most likely the reason for your ETS light. Lots of money. I'm currently looking for the part that needs to be replaced on those to be able to repair them.

#2 You have a new generation ABS control unit that also fails at about 85K miles or 5 years. Again, all these units will eventually fail.
I'm able to repair about 97% of the units I get.
Repairing and upgrading your ABS unit will most likely take care of your ABS and brake lights.

Well, it's a Volvo device the ABS Control Unit. A guy named Victor Rocha has been rebuilding these units - supposedly upgrading them. Core units must be used.

I'm thinking for the $130 it's worth a shot. He will test the control unit that I send in, and if it's not defective, then I'll know. If it is (and I suspect it is defective), then i'd imagine that this should clear up the problems.

The ABS control module on a '99 (fly by wire) car is different from the pre '99 ones. So although the problem may be the controller check with Vitor first to see if he can fix it.

My first move would be to check the ABS connector at the ECU for dirty contacts and the ignition switch. Then the battery earth leads and all the fuses for poor contact.
