Avoiding Airbag Light when removing dash 850

Need to pull my dash to do an odometer repair. Last time I pulled the dash to change some bulbs, I wound up with a light for faulty Airbag. In the process I had disconnected the right side airbag. I didn't turn on the ignition until it was reconnected but still wound up with the error.

If I disconnect the battery prior to disconnecting the airbag, will that prevent the error light?

I know there is a procedure on Bay 13 to do this by just propping up the drivers side of the dash, but last time I tried it I put several cracks in the black plastic strip that holds in the front of the dash. I would rather pull the whole dash than risk more damage.

Thanks

I think there is a misunderstanding in your interpreration, I was referring to the RIGHT SIDE airbag. The code is produced when the wire harness is disconnected.

How can I avoid this code?

right side airbag???? which country are you in? is car left or right hand drive? doesnt matter anyway and there is no confusing the issue, the thread talks about removing dash for SPEEDO/ODO repair ,not the whole dash so therefore only the top needs to come off. either way the only airbag you may need to disconnect is passenger side(if fitted) and as long as key is left off then you shouldnt have any srs light problems.

I know what happened. Chances are when you removed the steering from the column, you "snapped" the ABS coil. I did the same thing when yanking off my dash and sure enough the SRS light is glaring. I was following the Haynes Manual and part of the reset procedure said unwind it a number of turns and when re-installing the wheel and turning it, I had a snap. Besides the obvious SRS circuit connection, this could be the only other problem to happen.
Removing the dash is not a pretty or easy thing. It takes plenty of time. I don't see how you were able to crack the top panel if you had unscrewed the hood, side and instrument panel screws. I think once loose, you can just gently lift the top, release the clips and connection and the cluster comes off real easily.
I got pics if you need further help Good luck

      hi,
i dont know what either of you are talking about, to remove the instrument cluster you take the top of the dash off then then undo the plugs for the cluster then the two metal clips that hold the cluster in place ect etc...
the only airbag you might have to disconnect is if there is a passenger airbag fitted, but you never need to disconect the drivers side or remove the wheel or anything.
even if you have to disconect a passenger airbag then as long as the key is turned off and not turned on while the instrument cluster or airbag is disconected then there will be no problem with lights or fault codes etc..

There's actually 2 issues here. The first was he wanted to yank off the entire dash and thats where the SRS light question came up.
The second is what you are referring to...removal of the cluster the way he is trying to avoid. BTW Bill I did a similar thing and see exactly what you are referring to. At first I didnt notice, then on closer look I saw those little cracks right a t the center are and they looked like they would spread rapidly if I pulled the top side too far out. Unfortunately I didnt find an alternative way of removing the whole top, but only lifting up the driver's side. But then again I was really tackling a bigger -beast and once that evap was out, I could care less about the cracks:)
