105K on belt tensioners-not quite 1998

this may have been covered here, but i'll try.

had a 98 s70t come in on the hook, owner said don't start it please, i think the belt slipped off. belt done by owner or friend at 100k or so. car now has 119k. front cover sawn through in the belt run outline. turns out the belt tensioner has literally come apart, bearing failure.

i've alway stressed, but not on this board, the rotating parts in the belt drive will not make 210k. the tensioner, idler and the water pump's bearings will get tired. when the belt is changed, either early at 75k or whenever to 105k, replace the other stuff also. all the parts are cheaper than the rebuilding the head when the valves get bent. good luck, chuck.

    105K on belt tensioners-not quite 1998

    Chuck,

just curious, was this the hydraulic tensioner or the mechanical tensioner that failed? If it was the mechanical one, it should've been replaced with the belt at 100K as per volvo. The hydraulic ones should be replaced every 2 t-belts change or 140K miles.

this was the mechanical tensioner. the hydraulic tensioner belts get changed at 70k. i am aware that volvo suggests replacing the tensioner at 105k. the customer was given the option when the belt estimate was given by another shop and decided that was not an option, which is why only the belt was changed when he did it. luckily for him, he noticed the belt sawing through the cover and stopped driving it. i put it together today and the car ran. replaced the belt and tensioner and suggested we replace the idler and the pump. he opted for the idler only, gonna sell the car. and so it goes, chuck.

      Mechanical vs. hydraulic tensioners 1998

If you visit the Volvo website, they seem a little confused, since they recommend changing BOTH belt and tensioner at 70,000 miles and don't distinguish between the early '98 70k/hydraulic tensioner belts and the later 105k/mechanical tensioner belts.

I just changed belt-tensioner-idler at 140k on my '98, the tensioner wasn't leaking, yet.
