Check Engine Light V70-XC70 1998

Check Engine Light came on when kids got out and slammed the door. Last time it came on when we did not close the gas filler cap tightly and stayed on til the dealer switched it off. The Manual is useless in giving any clue other than 'possible fault in emission control system'.

How bad is this? Do I have to go back to the dealer again?

Thanks.

Or take the lazy way out. Disconnect the battery for ten minutes (remember to write down your radio station presets and security code). Once you reconnect the battery the light should reset. If it comes back on then continue your forensics as suggested in the other posts, otherwise it was a one-time blip. Mine came on last fall. I reset it and didn't see again all winter.

Thanks

Rumor has it local Pep Boys will read the code for you. You can
then look it up on the internet. I suspect any auto store would
read the code for you (since they then can possibly sell you the
related repair item -- if there is one).

Do not have them reset the codes if you need to pass an emission test
any time in the next couple of weeks (since it takes a while for
everything to reset and you won't pass emissions while various
OBDII emission systems are in a "reset" state).

Yea, I forgot to mention that Autozone will also read your codes for free IF you agree to buy what you need to fix the problem from them. Also, if you're into more in depth info and have access to a laptop PC, check out Alex Peper's software at obd-2.com You download the software from his site and purchase the appropriate cable and module to connect the computer to the cars OBD port.

You either need to go back to the dealer or someone with a code reader or invest in one yourself. They are worth the investment ($40 to 180) considering it probably cost you $50-75+ for them to tell you your gas cap was loose. Many guys swear by the Harbor Freight model for about $40. or you can go with Equus or similiar units for $100 up.
