Battery and alternator question S70

Good Day.

I went to start my car this morning and it was dead (1998 S70 Glt). I had it jump-started and took it for a spin to charge the battery. When I came to a stoplight the car just went dead with no warning and would not re-start. I called a friend and got it jump-started again. I could then drive it home. It will still not start on its own.
Why would it just stop with the engine running? Doesnt the generator or alternator give power to the sparkplugs etc? Or does it have to go through the battery first?
I have just over 100.000 miles with the original Volvo Battery. Will a new battery solve the problem or is it not being charged? How will I know so I won't be taken for a ride at the dealers? I have noticed in the last two months that the engine does not crank over as fast as it used to. Can a battery just go dead like that?

Thanks in advance.
Tracy
