T5 5 speed, should I look? V70-XC70 1998

I recently heard of a 98 T5, 5 speed, 126K miles for roughly 10K$, loaded. It's on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6464&item=2479102877&rd=1

but located in NY. Miles seem high, price too, however I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this. I know the engine is tough, the sales pitch claims it has a new clutch and rear seal. Any chance this could be a long term hauler? I know some of you out there have similar cars. I assume that most of the problems associated with the 98 MY have been corrected. I recognize that A/C is ALWAYS an issue with volvos, having had to replace most of the bits in my current car (93 940 wgon, 121K mi, no turbo).

Thanks, just toying with the idea.

Dr. Chip
Westchester Co NY

i've got a 98 t5m.i thought i had a clutch problem about 5k ago. when i launched it hard one time...sorta smelled for a while but it dissipated after a couple of weeks and it appears to be fine now .the car has 112k on it and i really enjoy driving it.i don't drive it all that hard (only occasional bursts)i enjoy the "sleeper" aspect of the car.i have been told by a feller who sells these on ebay that they will not last as long as the 7 0r 9 series...time will tell. also on the t5m no problems with autotrans or associated issues with cross country...i asked a lot of mechanics and brickboarders about the clutch problem when it occured ,including local dealer and all of them said they have never had to replace clutch...so if someone has had to there must be a story there

Hmm, One gets used to the longevity factor of the 7/9's. Perhaps I wait it out. Cold feet.
Also, the frequency of repair times hours lost equation suggests, perhaps, the early V's may not be ideal..

We'll see how the newer ones do. I'd hate to stray from Volvo's, but if they are too unreliable, I might have to. Even the 940 won't last forever.

      Thanks for the input.

The car sounds like a blast to drive, even here im Metropolis.

    T5 5 speed, should I look? V70-XC70 1998

    I have a 98 S70 T5 manual transmission. I have a problem where the clutch
makes a screeching sound when it is let out in first gear. It has been
doing that for 30K miles (now has 81K miles). The clutch does continue
to work fine. But, if I wanted to sell it I would have to get it fixed
since I doubt anyone would pay much for it with this problem. The seller
could have had the same issue (others have reported it) since major
clutch problems do not seem to be an issue.

And as long as the tranny is out the rear main seal might as well be
    replaced.

So, I don't think the recent work necessarily means it has been flogged.
It may have just been repaired to get a decent price for it. It is
difficult to not drive these cars hard -- they just really want to get
up and go (especially once you hit 2nd). So, I'd approach every turbo with
the idea it has been driven hard (but they seem to take it; the engine is
quite beefed up for the extra load).

I also agree that $10K is much too high for the milage.

      Thanks Ray,

I am still unsure if I'll take a look, too tempting I suspect.
The reliability issue is really at the heart of the matter. The 940 isn't perfect, but the annoying things (severly underpowered, fuel consumption relative to power, loss of AC vents under acceleration, etc) are minor.
The newer cars problems seem more catastrophic.

      Sound advise I suppose.
Still looking for a 95 940 turbo wagon, white on grey leather, no luck.
Plenty of these V wagons around...
Will keep the 93 940 wag (white on grey leather...non turbo)

    Seems rather pricey... V70-XC70 1998

Mine is at 141k, original clutch and original rear seal and I'd guess my car is worth about $6-7k wholesale.

I know it's history, so of course it's worth a lot more than that to me.

I recently lost a V70T5A on e-bay (for my kid) with a lot fewer miles and meticulous service documentation when it crossed the $10k threshold. My top bid was $9600. It went for about $10,600.

Hi Punx, I thought you might be one of the early responders. I though the price a little high too.

Is the clutch and seal an early warning sign of a well flogged auto?

Based on my experiences with the 740 and 940, this (115K mi and up) is also the time of mass failures of odd and obscure (to me any way) components.

I'll see what happens, I must admit some great hesitation in going V, there are not many Volvo dealers in lower Westchester Co. and my trusted independent is too far away for reoutine work.

      Thanks
      Chip

Chip, I purchased a '99 S70 T5 from a new car dealer in lower westchester, NY last October. Mine had 56k miles and was mint, so I paid $14k. $10k sounds about right for this area, but everything costs more around here.

I can tell you that since there is so much traffic near NYC, a replaced clutch is not unusual. The only cars being thrashed are rice rockets, SUVs and german cars. Most Volvos are driven by soccer mom's and as commuter cars. I drive mine hard sometimes, but the cops really crack down on speeding around here.
