2000 S70 Turbo

The ETS light has come on several times and I have noticed that there is some loss of power to the engine while driving. IT feels like the car is surging back and forth.

It was suggested that maybe the Eletronic Throttle Module needs to be cleaned and/or the software for the ETM needs to upgraded. Any thoughts on this? Possible costs to fix the problem assuming the ETM needs cleaning and the software needs an update.

Steve,

This is an old favourite for Volvos of this vintage(Kelley, jda2000 and myself amongst the many) have all had this problem. Cleaning is at best a temporary repair in my experience and you will end up replacing the TCM sooner or later. My advice if you plan to keep the car is to replace the TCM sooner as it can be quite nasty when it fails (Both Kelley and I can vouch for this)...
I am not aware of any software upgrades for this year that will fix this issue. Its a predominently hardware problem caused by poor design of a component.

This thing isn't even Bosch is it?? Saw in your post pictures that it is made in Spain by someone other than Bosch. Apparently the new ones (04) are better.

Actually its made by Magnetti Marelli in Italy (even though the ECU is a Bosch ME7 system - welcome to the global car)..... The new replacement one is the same brand... All I can hope is that under the covers they've improved on the deisgn. Time will tell.....

Actually its an interesting point...
Volvo - a swedish brand
S70 Assembled in Belgium.
Bosch ECU from Germany
Magenetti Marelli TCM from Italy
Original tyres from Pirelli - Italy
I wonder just how much of it is swedish?

Not very much...never has been...bosch electronics, japanese transmissions, german suspension...I could go on...

Volvo never claimed to manufacture the parts; they were astute and learned purchasers of parts.

The concept, however, is Swedish. The design was Swedish...not so sure now...

See the "ETS Redux" thread below for ETS woes. Don't fool with this light; get it checked ASAP. I had a bad experience last weekend. The entire ETS module had to be replaced, about $800-plus. Don't know the cost to clean/upgrade.
